What is a Digital Product Passport, and why should engineers care?

The EU is making Digital Product Passports mandatory for more and more products. Here is what that means for your software, in plain language.

DPPRegulation

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured, digital record of a product: what it is made of, where it comes from, how to repair it and how to recycle it. Under the EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), passports will become mandatory for more and more product groups, starting with batteries.

What this means for software

  • Data models: you need a clear, versioned model for product data.
  • Identity and access: different people see different parts of the passport.
  • Interoperability: passports must be readable outside your own systems.

Where to start

Start small: pick one product line, map the data you already have, and design for change.
